Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

HACKNEY, STEPHEN MONROE: Born in Alabama, he enlisted as a private in the 16th Infantry in April 1883. He was discharged in October 1886 as a corporal to accept a commission as a second lieutenant in the same regiment.  He served at Fort Davis from November 1886 to August 1887 with Company I, 16th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 4th Infantry in February 1894. He transferred to the 5th Infantry in April1894 and was promoted to captain in 1899.

HAGEN, OSCAR: Born in Prussia, he served as an enlisted man with the 26th Infantry from May 1857 until November 1861 when he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 11th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1862 and to captain in 1868. He transferred to the 9th Cavalry in January 1871 and served at Fort Davis with the 9th in April and May of 1871 in command of Company B. He retired in April 1879 and died in December 1880.

HAMILTON, JOHN: Born in Ireland, he served as an enlisted man in the 1st Infantry from October 1850 to June 1863 when he was appointed a second lieutenant in the same regiment. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1866 and to captain in 1879. He served at Fort Davis in April and May of 1882 in command of Company E, 1st Infantry. He retired in April 1887.

HAMMOND, BRANT CORYELL: Born in Pennsylvania, he entered the army in October 1864 as the Chaplain of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry and mustered out in June 1865. He reentered the army in February 1885 and served as the post chaplain at Fort Davis from April 1885 to January 1888. He retired in August 1901.

HARDIE, FRANCIS HUNTER: Born in California in 1854, he attended the U.S. Military Academy in 1872, but did not graduate. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry in July 1876. Promoted to first lieutenant in 1881, he served with the 3rd at Fort Davis as the post quartermaster and acting commissary of subsistence from May 1885 to October 1887. He was promoted to captain in 1891 and to major in the 14th Cavalry in February 1901. He retired for disability in February 1909 and died in April 1912.

HARDIN, CHARLES BUFF: Born in Illinois, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Cavalry in August 1872 and mustered out as a sergeant in April 1882. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 18th Infantry in March 1882, and promoted to first lieutenant in 1888. He served at Fort Davis from May to July 1891 as the acting assistant quartermaster and the acting commissary of subsistence. He was promoted to captain in April of 1898.

HARMON, WILLIAM R.: Born in Ohio, he served as a lieutenant in the 70th Ohio Infantry from January until September1862. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in August 1867 and promoted to first lieutenant in 1873. He served at Fort Davis with the 10th from May 1875 to August 1876 with Company H. He was placed on a surgeon’s certificate of disability from August 1876 to November 1881 and again from August 1882 to April 1885. He died in July 1886.

HARRIS, HENRY SUTTON TARRING: Born in Virginia, he entered the army in January 1886 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis as the acting post surgeon, with the rank of captain, in the spring of 1889 while the post surgeon (Dr. Lauderdale) was on leave. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in February1901.

HART, DANIEL: Born in New Jersey, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 7th New Jersey Infantry in August 1861 and mustered out as a lieutenant colonel in July 1865. He was appointed a first lieutenant in the 40th Infantry in January 1867, transferring to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis from August until October 1873 with Company G, 25th Infantry. He was promoted to captain in November 1873 and died in April 1878.

HARTZ, EDWARD L.: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in1855 and was assigned to the 7th Infantry. In August 1855, he transferred to the 8th Infantry and served at Fort Davis with Company D of the 8th as a second lieutenant from December 1855 to October 1859. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1861 and to captain in the 27th Infantry in 1866. He died in November 1868.

HATCH, EDWARD: Born in Maine, he was appointed a captain in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry in August 1861. He mustered out in January 1866 as a Brevet Major General of Volunteers. Appointed the colonel of the 9th Cavalry in July 1866, he served at Fort Davis as post commander from November 1869 to January1871. He died suddenly, while still on active duty, at Fort Robinson, Nebraska in April 1889.

HAY, WILLIAM HENRY: Born in Florida, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1886. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from October 1886 to October 1887 with Troop L of the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant, 10th Cavalry, in 1893 and to captain in 1901.

HAZEN, WILLIAM BABCOCK: Born in Vermont, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1855 and was assigned to the 4th Infantry. He transferred to the 8th Infantry in September 1855 and served at Fort Davis with the 8th as a second lieutenant with Company F from February to August 1858. He was promoted to first lieutenant in April 1861 and to captain in May1861. He was appointed the colonel in the 38th Infantry in July 1866 and promoted to Chief Signal Officer, U. S. Army, with the rank of brigadier general, in December 1880. He died in January 1887.

HEARD, JOHN WILLIAM: Born in Mississippi, he graduated from the U. S. Military Academy in1883. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Troop C, 3rd Cavalry, from February 1886 to October 1887. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1889 and to captain in 1899. He was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1916 and died on active duty in February of 1922 at New Orleans, Louisiana.

HENTON, JAMES: Born in England, he enlisted as a private in the 6th Infantry in November 1853 and mustered out in 1858 as a first sergeant. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 14th Infantry in October 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1862 and to captain in 1865. He transferred to the 23rd Infantry in 1866 and served at Fort Davis as captain of Company B, 23rd Infantry, from May 1890 to May 1891. He was promoted to major in 1891 and to lieutenant colonel in 1894. He died, while on active duty, in July 1895 at Fort Ringgold, Texas.

HODGES, CHARLES LIBBENS: Born in Rhode Island, he enlisted as a private in the 65th New York Infantry in August 1861 and mustered out in July 1865 as a sergeant major. He reenlisted as a private in the 18th Infantry in November 1869 and mustered out in January 1875 to accept an appointment as a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis in August and September of 1875 with Company G, 25th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1880 and to captain in 1891. He was promoted to major in 1900 transferring to the 17th Infantry. In 1901 he transferred to the 23rd Infantry.

HOOD, CHARLES CROOK: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 31st Ohio Infantry in August 1861 and mustered out in February 1864 as a sergeant to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in the same regiment. He mustered out as a captain in July 1865 and was appointed a captain in the 41st Infantry in July 1866. He transferred to the 24th Infantry in November 1869 and served with that regiment at Fort Davis in command of Company F from June 1870 to April 1872. He was appointed a major in the 7th Infantry in 1892, the lieutenant colonel of the 19th Infantry in 1897, and the colonel of the 16th Infantry in 1899. He retired November 1902 as a brigadier general.

HORTON, WILLIAM E.: Born in Connecticut, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 11th Connecticut Infantry in December 1861 separating in April 1864 to accept an appointment as a first lieutenant in the same regiment. He resigned in October 1864, but accepted a commission as a first lieutenant in the 8th U.S. Veteran Volunteers in March 1865. He was appointed a first lieutenant in the 41st Infantry in June 1867. He served at Fort Davis from April 1868 to December 1869 with Company E of the 41st and Company L of the 24th Infantry regiments.  He was honorably mustered out of service in January 1871.

HOUGH, ALFRED LACEY: Born in New Jersey, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry in April 1861 and mustered out in June 1861 to accept a commission as a captain in the 19th Infantry. He was promoted a major in the 22nd Infantry in 1874 and to lieutenant colonel of the 16th Infantry in February 1882. He served at Fort Davis as post commander from May to August 1882. He was promoted to colonel of the 9th Infantry in 1888 and retired in April 1980. 

HUGHES, JAMES BRYAN: Born in North Carolina in 1863, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with the 10th from September 1884 to April 1885 with Troop B. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1891 and to captain with the 1st Cavalry in July 1899. He transferred to the 4th Cavalry in August 1899. He was promoted to major in the 1st Cavalry in 1911 and retired in March 1914. He died in January 1933 at Washington, D.C.

HUGO, WILLIAM H.: Born in New York, he was appointed a captain in the 70th New York Infantry in May 1861, honorably mustering out in 1864. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 16th Infantry in May 1866, transferring to the 25th Infantry in September 1866. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1868 and was assigned to the 9th Cavalry in January 1871. He served at Fort Davis with the 9th from February to May 1871 as the first lieutenant of Company B. He was dismissed from the army in November 1881.

HUMFREVILLE, JACOB LEE: Born in Ohio in 1841, he enlisted as a private in the 11th Ohio Infantry in April 1861 and mustered out in August 1861. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 11th Ohio Cavalry in March 1861. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867 and to captain in May 1870. He served at Fort Davis from January 1870 to May 1871 as both a first lieutenant in charge of the quartermaster department and as the captain of Company K, 9th Cavalry. He was dismissed from the army in April 1874.

HUNT, THOMAS BENJAMIN: Born in Canada, he was appointed a first lieutenant and regimental quartermaster in the 4th Minnesota Infantry in December 1861 and mustered out in April 1863. He was appointed a captain in the Quartermaster Department in 1867. He served at Fort Davis from December 1870 to October 1871 as post quartermaster. He was cashiered out of the army in February 1874, but was re-appointed with former date of rank in June 1879. He retired in February 1885 and died in September 1891.

HUNTER, GEORGE KING: Born in Ohio in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to  the 3rd Cavalry.  He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1881 and served at Fort Davis with the 3rd from December 1885 to August 1886 as the regimental and post adjutant.   He was promoted to captain in 1891 and to major of the 15th Cavalry in 1901. He retired as a brigadier general in 1930 and died in February 1940 in Washington, D.C.
