GARDNER, WILLIAM HENRY: Born in North Carolina, he entered the army in September 1861 as an assistant surgeon. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in 1882 and served at Fort Davis as the post surgeon from May 1882 to September 1886. Retiring in December 1898, he had been promoted to lieutenant colonel and deputy surgeon general in 1896.
GASTON, JOSEPH ALFRED: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1881. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1886 and served at Fort Davis with Troop H, 8th Cavalry, from November 1887 to May 1888. He was promoted to captain in 1895, and to major in the 1st Cavalry in February 1903.
GEDDES, ANDREW: Born in Canada, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Iowa Infantry in May 1861. He was appointed a captain in the 8th Iowa Infantry in October 1861 and mustered out in April 1866 as a lieutenant colonel. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 40th Infantry in June 1867, he transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis with Company A, 25th Infantry, from August 1870 to July 1871, and again from August 1876 to May 1878. He was promoted to captain in 1878, but was dismissed from the army in December 1880. He returned in December 1900 as a captain in the 18th Infantry and retired on January 14, 1901.
GERHARD, WILLIAM: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1869. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 9th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Company K, 9th Cavalry, from October 1869 to April 1871. Promoted to first lieutenant in November 1873, he resigned from the army effective September 30, 1874.
GILLMORE, QUINCY O’MAHER: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1873 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He resigned in November 1874. In March 1875, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 8th Cavalry, and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1882. He served as the acting assistant quartermaster at Fort Davis from October 1887 to May 1888. He retired in May 1896, but reentered the army in June 1898 as a lieutenant colonel of the 4th New Jersey Infantry. He mustered out of the volunteers as a colonel in April 1899.
GILMORE, JOHN CURTIS: Born in Canada, he was appointed a captain in the 16th New York Infantry in May 1861 mustering out in May 1863. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for distinguished conduct in the Battle of Salem Heights, Virginia, in May 1863. He reentered the army in March 1865 as the lieutenant colonel of the 193rd New York Infantry and mustered out as its colonel in January 1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 12th Infantry in May 1866 and transferring to the 30th Infantry in December 1866, he was promoted to captain in the 38th Infantry in January 1867. He transferred to the 24th Infantry in 1869. He served at Fort Davis in command of Company H, 24th Infantry, from June 18, 1880 to September 12, 1880. He retired in April 1901 as a colonel and as an Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers.
GIRARD, JOSEPH BASIL: Born in France in December 1846, he entered the army in May 1867 as an assistant surgeon. He served at Fort Davis, with the rank of captain, as the post surgeon from May 1879 to February 1881. He retired in December 1910 as a colonel and the Chief Surgeon for the Department of Texas. He died in August 1918 at San Antonio, Texas.
GONZALES, MANUEL JOAQUIN: Born in Madeira, he entered the army in August 1862 as the Hospital Chaplain of Volunteers and mustered out in September 1863. Appointed the Chaplain of the 9th Cavalry in December 1868, with the rank of captain, he served at Fort Davis in that capacity from May 1869 to November 1871. He retired in June 1882 and died in September 1885.
GRAY, CYRUS NUTT: Born in Indiana, he enlisted as a private in the 22nd Indiana Infantry in July 1861 mustering out in February 1864 as a sergeant major. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 15th U.S. Colored Infantry in February 1864, resigning as a captain in November 1865. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 39th Infantry in June 1867, he transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869. He served at Fort Davis with the 25th from May 1872 to April 1876 as the post adjutant and from April 1876 to July 1879 with Company H. Promoted to captain in 1879, he was dismissed from the army in September 1887.
GRIERSON, BENJAMIN HENRY: Born in 1826 in Pennsylvania, he served in the Civil War attaining the rank of Major General of Volunteers. He was appointed colonel of the 10th Cavalry in July 1866. He served as Commander of the Military District of the Pecos from 1878-1881, and as post commander of Fort Davis from 1882 to 1885. He retired a brigadier general in 1890. He died in August 1911 and was buried in Jacksonville, Illinois.
GRIERSON, CHARLES HENRY: Born in Illinois in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1879 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis from August 1882 to April 1885 with Troop D, 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in July 1886, to captain in 1897, and to major in August 1905. He retired as colonel of the 10th Cavalry in 1915 and died in Washington, D. C. in 1928.
GUILD, LA FAYETTE: Born in Alabama, he entered the army in March 1849 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis from October to December 1854. He was dismissed from the army in July 1861 to serve in the Army of Confederate States of America as a surgeon. He died in July 1870.
