Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

EDGAR, JAMES C.: Born in Missouri, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st New Mexico Cavalry in January 1864, resigning in June 1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in September 1867 and assigned to Company K, he served at Fort Davis in July 1868, but was cashiered out of the army effective July 14, 1868.

EDMUNDS, FRANK HEARTT: Born in Michigan, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1871. He  was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 1st Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis with Company H, 1st Infantry, from May to December 1881. He was promoted to captain in 1889 and to major in1899. He died in June 1900.

EDWARDS, CLARENCE RANSOM: Born in Ohio, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1883 and was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with Company D, 23rd Infantry, from May to December 1890. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in 1891 and to captain in 1898. He was assigned to the 10th Infantry in 1899. In 1902, with the rank of colonel, he was serving as the Chief of Bureau of Insular Affairs.

EGAN, PETER RALPH: Born in Ireland, he entered the army as an assistant surgeon in May 1882, and served at Fort Davis as the assistant post surgeon, with the rank of captain, from August to October 1890. He was promoted to major in 1898 and served as a Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in 1900.

EGGLESTON, MILLARD FILLMORE: Born in Indiana in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis as a second lieutenant with Troop M, 10th Cavalry, from August 1882 to October 1883 and again from December 1884 to April 1885. He was promoted to first lieutenant in April 1885 and resigned in July 1890. He died in February 1912 in Salem, Oregon.

ELTING, OSCAR: Born in New York in 1831, he enlisted as a private in the 1st New York Cavalry in July 1861 and mustered out a corporal in August 1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry in July 1867, he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1869 and to captain in 1881. He served with the 3rd at Fort Davis from May 1885 to February 1886 in command of Troop E. He retired in August 1895 at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont and died in November 1902 in Burlington, Vermont.
