Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

CABELL, De ROSEY CARRALL: Born in Arkansas, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He  served at Fort Davis with Troop C of the 8th Cavalry from November 1887 to May 1888. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 5th Cavalry in April 1891, but transferred back to the 8th Cavalry within ten days. He was promoted to captain in the 6th Cavalry in 1899. He transferred to the 1st Cavalry in 1902.

CALLINAN, DANIEL FITZGERALD: Born in Ireland in 1839, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Infantry in September 1860, mustering out in 1863 as a first sergeant to accept and appointed a second lieutenant in that same regiment. Promoted to first lieutenant in 1866 and to captain in 1879, he served at Fort Davis in command of Company D, 1st Infantry, from April 1881 to July 1882. He retired October 22, 1891.

CARLTON, CALEB HENRY: Born in Ohio, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1859 and was appointed to the 7th Infantry, transferring to the 4th Infantry as a second lieutenant in October of that year. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1861 and to captain in the 4th Infantry in 1862. He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry in 1870 and promoted to major on the 3rd Cavalry in 1876. He served at Fort Davis with the 3rd from May 1885 to August 1886. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1889 and to colonel of the 8th Cavalry in 1892. He retired in June 1897 as a brigadier general and died March 21, 1923 in Atlanta City, New Jersey.

CARPENTER, LOUIS HENRY: Born in New Jersey, he enlisted as a private in the 6th Cavalry in November 1861 and mustered out in March 1866 as the colonel of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry. He was appointed a captain with the 10th Cavalry in July 1866 and was decorated with the Medal of Honor for distinguished bravery during the Indian campaign in Kansas and Colorado in September 1868. He served at Fort Davis in command of Company H, 10th Cavalry, from May 1875 to March 1883, when he was promoted to major in the 5th Cavalry. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Cavalry in 1892, transferring to the 7th Cavalry in 1894. He transferred back to the 5th Cavalry as colonel in 1897 and retired in October 1899 as a brigadier general. He died in 1916.

CARRINGTON, FRANK de LAUNAY: Born in Georgia in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1878. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 1st Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with the 1st Infantry from December 1881 to July 1882 with Company C. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1883 and to captain in 1893. He retired as a major in June 1910 and died in December 1940 in Washington, D.C.  

CARROLL, HENRY: Born in New York, he enlisted as a private in the 3rd Artillery in January 1859 and was mustered out in January 1864 as the first sergeant. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 3rd Cavalry in May 1864, and a first lieutenant in 1866, he transferred to the 9th Cavalry, as a captain, in January 1867. He served with the 9th at Fort Davis in command of Company F from September 1867 to February 1869. He was promoted to major with the 1st Cavalry in 1885 and to lieutenant colonel of the 6th Cavalry in 1896. He became colonel of the 7th Cavalry in March 1899 and retired five weeks later.

CHANDLER, ELIAS: Born in Illinois, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 16th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from January 5 through March 14, 1881 with Company G, 16th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1887 and to captain in the 1st Infantry in April 1898. He was honorably mustered out in October 1898. 

CLAPP, WILLIAM HENRY: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 71st New York State Militia in April 1861, mustering out in July 1861. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 42nd Ohio Infantry in September 1861, he was mustered out in December 1865 as a captain and the Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers. He was appointed a second lieutenant and a first lieutenant in the 11th Infantry in February 1866, transferring to the 16th Infantry in April 1869. He was promoted to captain in 1874 and served at Fort Davis with the 16th Infantry from September to December 1883, from February 1884 to May 1885, and from June 1886 to May 1888 in command of Company I. He was promoted to major in the 24th Infantry in 1897 and to lieutenant colonel of the 21st Infantry in 1899. He retired in September 1900 and died in December 1905 in East Hartford, Connecticut.

CLARKE, POWHATAN HENRY: Born in Louisiana in 1862, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1884. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Troop K of the 10th Cavalry from September 1884 to April 1885. In May 1886 he earned the Medal of Honor for rescuing a wounded soldier under heavy fire. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in 1891, but transferred back to the 10th Cavalry in February 1892.  He was detached to serve with the 12th Westphalia Hussars at Dusseldorf, Germany, returning to his regiment in May 1892. He drowned in the Little Big Horn River in July 1893.

CLENDENIN, DAVID RAMSAY: Born in Pennsylvania in 1830, he was appointed a captain in the 8th Illinois Cavalry in September 1861 and was mustered out in July 1865 as a lieutenant colonel and brevet brigadier general of volunteers. He reentered the army as a major in the 8th Cavalry in January 1867, transferring to the 3rd Cavalry as its lieutenant colonel in November 1882. He served at Fort Davis with the 3rd Cavalry from May 1885 to October 1887. He retired in April 1891 and died in 1895 in Illinois.

CLENDENIN, PAUL: Born in Illinois, he entered the army as an assistant surgeon in 1886 and served at Fort Davis as post surgeon from September 1886 to February 1887. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in the volunteers in 1898. He died in July 1899.

COCHRAN, MELVILLE AUGUSTUS: Born in Maine in 1836, he was appointed a captain in the 16th Infantry in August 1861, transferring to the 2nd Infantry in 1869. He was promoted to major in the 12th Infantry in 1879. In May 1883, he became the lieutenant colonel of the 5th Infantry and served at Fort Davis as post commander from June 1888 to August 1890. He was promoted to colonel of the 6th Infantry in 1890 and retired in June 1898. He died in May 1904 in Jacksonville, Florida.

COLE, ROBERT GRANDERSON: Born in Virginia, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1850 and was appointed to the 5th Infantry. He transferred to the 8th Infantry in February 1851 and served at Fort Davis with the 8th as a second lieutenant with Company F from December 1854 to November 1855 and as a first lieutenant with Company C from November 1855 to January 1858. He resigned his commission in January 1861 to serve in the Army of the Confederate States of America and died in November 1887.

CONNOLLY, THOMAS: Born in Ireland, he enlisted in the 19th Infantry in June 1871. In July 1880, while a sergeant in general services, he was discharged to accept a commission as a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from March 1881 to December 1881with Company G, 1st Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1889 and retired as a captain in April 1898. He died in May 1900 in Berkeley, California.

COONEY, MICHAEL: Born in Ireland, he enlisted in the 1st Cavalry in December 1856, transferring to the 6th Cavalry in 1861. He was appointed a captain in the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry in January 1865 mustering out in March 1866. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866, he served at Fort Davis with Company I of the 9th from July 1867 to May 1868. He was promoted to captain backdated to January 1868 and to major in the 4th Cavalry in 1888. He became the lieutenant colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1897 and colonel of the 4th Cavalry in June 1899. He retired in September 1899.

COOPER, CHARLES LAWRENCE: Born in New York in 1845, he enlisted as a private in the 71st New York State Militia in May 1862 and transferred to the 21st New York State Militia in June 1863. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 127th U.S. Colored Infantry in September 1864, he was mustered out in October 1865. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 39th Infantry in 1866 and promoted to first lieutenant in 1867.  He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry in December 1870 and served at Fort Davis with the 10th from August 1882 to April 1885. He served as the first lieutenant of Troop M from August 1882 to December 1882. From that date until September 1883, he served as regimental and post adjutant. Promoted to captain, he then served at Fort Davis in command of  Troop M. He was promoted to major in the 5th Cavalry in 1898, to lieutenant colonel of the 15th Cavalry in 1901, and to colonel of the 5th Cavalry in January 1903. He retired in August 1903 as a brigadier general and died in September 1919 in Washington, D.C.

COURTNEY, MICHAEL LEWIS: Born in Ireland, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 102nd Illinois Infantry in July 1862 and was mustered out in April 1863 to accept a commission as a second lieutenant in the same regiment. Appointed the lieutenant colonel of the 16th U.S. Colored Infantry in December 1863, he mustered out in April 1866. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 39th Infantry in July 1866 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1867. He transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869 and was promoted to captain in May 1875. He served at Fort Davis with the 25th Infantry from October 1875 to June 1880 in command of Company H. He died in July 1886.

COWLES, WARREN HAYDEN: Born in Pennsylvania, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1880 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 16th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with the 16th Infantry with Company I from May 1882 to May 1885, and again from June to September 1886. He was promoted to first lieutenant in September 1886 and to captain with the 4th Infantry in 1898. In 1902, he transferred to the 24th Infantry.

CRANDAL, FREDERICK MORTIMER: Born in Pennsylvania, he attended the U.S. Military Academy in 1848-1849. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 33rd Illinois Infantry, he served with that regiment from August 1861 to November 1862.  He joined the 48th U.S. Colored Infantry as its colonel in August 1863, mustering out in January 1866 as a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. He was appointed a first lieutenant in the 38th Infantry in July 1866 and transfer to the 24th Infantry, as a captain, in November 1869. He served at Fort Davis with the 24th Infantry from June to October 15, 1880 in command of Company A. He retired in May 1895, having been promoted to major in the 3rd Infantry in January 1895.

CRANE, CHARLES JUDSON: Born in Mississippi, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 24th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis with the 24th Infantry from September to November 1880 with Companies C and K. He was promoted to captain in 1892 and to major in the 16th Infantry in 1901.

CUNNINGHAM, JOHN MARION: Born in Illinois, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 19th Infantry in September 1879 and served with the 19th at Fort Davis from October to December 1889 with Company F. He retired in May 1890.

CUSACK, PATRICK: Born in Ireland, he enlisted in the army in September 1855 mustering out in January 1865 as the sergeant major of the 6th Cavalry. He was appointed a captain in the 6th U. S. Colored Cavalry in March of 1865, and a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in March 1867. He was promoted to first lieutenant effective July 1867 and served at Fort Davis in command of Company H, 9th Cavalry, from July 1867 to April 1868. He was promoted to captain in 1883 and retired in April 1891. He died in January 1894.

CUSTER, BETHEL MOORE: Born in Pennsylvania, he enlisted as a private in the 19th Pennsylvania Infantry in August 1861 and transferred to the 90th Pennsylvania Infantry, as a sergeant, in September 1861. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 32nd U.S. Colored Infantry in March 1864 and mustered out in January 1866 as a first lieutenant in the 11th U.S. Colored Infantry.  Appointed a second lieutenant in the 38th Infantry in July 1866, he transferred to the 24th Infantry in November 1869 and served with the 24th at Fort Davis from May 1871 to March 1872 as the first lieutenant of Company F. He was promoted to captain in 1880, and died in December 1887.
