Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

BALDWIN, FRANK DWIGHT: Born in Michigan in 1842, he served in the Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, Georgia. Appointed a first lieutenant in the 19th U.S. Infantry in February 1866, he transferred to the 37th Infantry later that year and to the 5th Infantry in May 1869. He was awarded a second Medal of Honor for distinguished gallantry in action near McLellan Creek, Texas, on November 8, 1874. He was promoted to captain in 1879 and served at Fort Davis from June 1888 to October 1890 in command of Company K, 5th Infantry. He was promoted to major in 1896 and became the lieutenant colonel of the 4th Infantry in 1899. He was promoted to colonel of the 27th Infantry in 1901 and to brigadier general in 1902. He retired in 1906 and died in April 1923.

BALDWIN, THEODORE ANDERSON: Born in New Jersey in 1839, he enlisted as a private in the 19th Infantry in May 1862. In February 1865, he was appointed a first lieutenant with the 19th Infantry, and in July 1867 he was promoted to captain.  He was assigned to the 10th Cavalry in December 1870 and served at Fort Davis from June to September 1883 in command of Troop I.  He was promoted to major in the 7th Cavalry in 1887 and to lieutenant colonel of the 10th Cavalry in 1896. He became colonel of the 7th Cavalry in 1899 and retired in April 1903 with the rank of brigadier general.

BARNUM, MALVERN HILL: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1886. He served at Fort Davis from September 1886 to October 1887 and again from November 1890 to April 1891 as a second lieutenant with Troop F, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 5th Cavalry in 1893 and transferred to the 10th Cavalry in 1894. He was promoted to captain in the 8th Cavalry in 1901.

BARR, DAVID EGLINTON: Born in Scotland, he entered the army in September 1865 as the chaplain of the 81st U.S. Colored Infantry. He transferred to the 25th Infantry in April 1869 and served at Fort Davis from May through August 1872 as the Regimental Chaplain of the 25th Infantry.  He resigned in September 1872.

BARRY, THOMAS HENRY: Born in New York in 1855, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 7th Cavalry. He transferred to the 1st Infantry in August 1880 and was promoted to first lieutenant in March 1882. He served with the 1st at Fort Davis from March through July 1882 as the regimental quartermaster. He was promoted to captain in 1891, and to major in the assistant adjutant general’s office in 1897. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1900 and to colonel in 1902. He retired a major general in October 1919 and died two months later in Washington, D.C.

BATES, KINZIE: Born in Michigan, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Michigan Volunteers in May 1861 and was appointment to second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in August 1861. He was promoted to first lieutenant in November 1861, and to captain in 1866. He served at Fort Davis with the 1st Infantry from April 1881 to May 1, 1882 in command of Company K, 1st Infantry. He died in February 1884 in Detroit, Michigan.

BAYARD, WILLIAM: Born in New York, he enlisted in the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry in March 1862. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 4th Cavalry in 1863 and was promoted to first lieutenant in 1865.  He was promoted to captain in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866.  He served at Fort Davis with the 9th from July 1867 to January 1871 in command of Company C. Honorably mustered out of the army in 1871, he died August 29, 1897.

BECK, WILLIAM HENRY: Born in Pennsylvania in 1842, he served in the Civil War with various units and was appointed a second lieutenant in the 10th Cavalry in June 1867. He was promoted to first lieutenant in December 1867, and served at Fort Davis with the 10th from December 1878 to September 1884 as the first lieutenant of Company C. He was promoted to captain in 1887, and to major in the 6th Cavalry in 1901. Appointed a brigadier general in 1905, he retired in 1906. He died in November 1911 in Washington D.C.

BENNETT, FRANK TRACY: Born in Ohio, he enlisted as a private in the 18th Infantry in April 1862 and was appointed a second lieutenant in February 1863. Promoted to first lieutenant in 1864, he resigned in October 1866, but was reinstated in December 1866. He was promoted to captain in the 39th Infantry in 1867, and assigned to the 9th Cavalry in December 1870. He served at Fort Davis with the 9th from July 1871 to April 1875 in command of Company I. He was promoted to major in the 2nd Cavalry in 1885 and was retired for disability in January 1889. He died in June 1894.

BERNARD, REUBEN FRANK: Born in Tennessee in 1834, he enlisted as a private in the 1st Dragoons in February 1855. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Cavalry in 1862. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1863 and to captain in 1866. He was promoted to major in 1882 with the 8th Cavalry and served with the 8th Cavalry at Fort Davis from November 1887 to May 1888. He retired as the lieutenant colonel of the 9th Cavalry in October 1896 and died in November 1903 in Washington, D.C.

BEYER, CHARLES D.: Born in New York, he enlisted in August 1858 as a General Service Musician. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 81st U.S. Colored Infantry in October 1865 and a captain in the 41st Infantry in 1867. He transferred to the 24th Infantry in November 1869 and arrived at Fort Davis to assume command of Company B, 24th Infantry in December 1869. He transferred to Company C, 9th U.S. Cavalry in January 1871 and served with that company at Fort Davis until June of 1871. He was dismissed from the army in 1884 and died in September 1898.

BIGELOW, JOHN JR.: Born in New York in 1854, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1883 and served at Fort Davis from with the 10th November 1884 to April 1, 1885 with Troop K. He was promoted to captain in 1893 and to major in the 9th Cavalry in 1902. He retired in September 1904, but was recalled to active duty when the United States entered World War I. He retired a lieutenant colonel in June 1919, and died in March 1936 at Washington, D.C.

BIRNEY, JAMES G.: Born in Connecticut, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 7th Michigan Cavalry in November 1862 and was appointed a second lieutenant in January 1863. Mustered out in June 1866, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1866. He was promoted to first lieutenant in April 1867, and served at Fort Davis with the 9th from July 1867 to December 1869 as the first lieutenant of Company C. He died at Fort Davis in January 1870.

BLACK, CHARLES STRATTON: Born in Ireland, he was appointed an assistant surgeon in December 1883 and served at Fort Davis as the post surgeon from March 1887 to April 1888 with the rank of first lieutenant. He resigned in April 1890.

BLAKE, EDWARD D: Born in South Carolina, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1843. He was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the 2nd Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry in 1847. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1851 and served with Company H at Fort Davis from November 1854 to May 1856. He was promoted to captain in October 1860 and again served at Fort Davis with Company H from January to April 1861. In June 1861, he resigned his commission to accept an appointment as the Assistant Inspector General of the Confederate States of America. He died in November 1882.

BLISS, ZENAS RANDALL: Born in Rhode Island in1835, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1854 and was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry. Transferring to the 8th Infantry in March 1855, he served with the 8th at Fort Davis as a second lieutenant from October1855 to May 1858 with Company A. Appointed the colonel of the 10th Rhode Island Infantry in May 1862, he transferred to the 7th Rhode Island Infantry in August 1862 and was mustered out in June 1865. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Appointed a major in the 39th Infantry in August 1867, he transferred to the 25th Infantry in March 1869 and served at Fort Davis with the 25th from March 1873 to April 1879, making him the only officer to have served at both the first and second Fort Davis. He retired as a major general in May 1897 and died in January 1900.

BOICE, THEODORE A.: Born in New York, he enlisted as a sergeant in the 5th New York Cavalry in August 1861and was appointed a first lieutenant in January 1863, mustering out in July 1865 as a lieutenant colonel. From September 1865 to May 1867, he served as a private, sergeant, and first sergeant in Company G, 2nd Cavalry, under the name of Guy Traver. Appointed captain of Company I, 9th Cavalry in July 1867, he served at Fort Davis from January to May 1868. He was cashiered from the army in July 1869.

BOMFORD, JAMES VOTY: Born in New York, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1832. He was commissioned a brevet second lieutenant and assigned to the 2nd Infantry. He was promoted to second lieutenant later that year. He transferred to the 8th Infantry, as a first lieutenant, in July 1838. He was promoted to captain in 1845 and served with the 8th at Fort Davis in command of Company H from October 1854 to April 1858. He served again at Fort Davis in the summer of 1860. He was promoted to major in the 6th Infantry in October 1860, to lieutenant colonel of the 16th Infantry in 1862, and to colonel of the 8th Infantry in 1864. He retired in June 1874 and died in January 1892.

BOOTH, CHARLES ALFRED: Born in New York, he was appointed a captain of volunteers in June 1863 and was mustered out in February 1866. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in March 1867, he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878. He served with the 1st at Fort Davis with Company E from June 1881 to July 1882. He was promoted to captain in 1883 and to major in 1896. He died in November 1900.

BORDEN, GEORGE PENNINGTON: Born in Indiana, he enlisted as a private in the 121st New York Volunteers in July 1862 mustering out in October 1863. He attended the U.S. Military Academy from September 1863 to January 1864 and was appointed a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry in October 1866. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1878 and to captain in February 1891. He served at Fort Davis in command of Company F, 5th Infantry, in May and June of 1891. He was promoted to major in the 3rd Infantry in September 1899, but returned to the 5th in November 1899. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Infantry in November 1902 and transferred back to the 5th Infantry a month later.

BORDEN, WILLIAM CLINE: Born in New York, he entered the army in December 1883 as an assistant surgeon and served at Fort Davis as post surgeon, with the rank of captain, from October 1890 to June 1891. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in 1901.

BOSWORTH, GEORGE BACON: Born in New York, he enlisted as a private in the 8th New York Militia in May 1861 mustering out in August 1861. Appointed a major in the 87th New York Infantry in October 1861, he resigned in July 1862. He was appointed a major in the 16th New York Cavalry in January 1864, and was mustered out in June 1865 as a member of the 3rd New York Provisional Cavalry.  He was appointed a first lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in July 1867 and served at Fort Davis with Company B of the 9th from July 1870 to January 1871 when he was honorably mustered out of service.

BOWEN, WILLIAM HOLMAN CARY: Born in New Mexico, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry in October 1875. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served with the 5th at Fort Davis as the first lieutenant of Company K from June 1888 to July 1890. He was promoted to captain in 1893 and to major in 1901.

BRACKETT, ALBERT GALLATIN: Born in New York in 1820, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 4th Indiana Infantry in June 1847, mustering out in July 1848. He was appointed a captain in the 2nd Cavalry in March 1855, transferring to the 5th Cavalry in 1861. He was promoted to major in the 1st Cavalry in 1862 and to the lieutenant colonel of the 2nd Cavalry in June 1868. He transferred to the 3rd Cavalry, as its colonel, in March 1879. He served at Fort Davis from April 1885 to September 1887 as the regimental commander of the 3rd Cavalry and as post commander. He retired in February 1891 and died in June 1896 in Washington, D.C.

BRANT, LOUIS PHILIP: Born in Ohio in 1849, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1873. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 21st Infantry, but resigned in March 1876. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in August 1879, he served at Fort Davis with Company K of the 1st from December1881 to April1882. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1884 and to captain in 1897. He received a disability retirement in January 1899, and died in May 1924 in San Francisco, California.

BRETT, JAMES EDWIN: Born in North Carolina, he enlisted as a private and served as a hospital steward with the 12th Infantry from September 1870 to June 1880. In July 1880, he was commission as a second lieutenant in the 24th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis with Company B of the 24th from August to November 1880. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1887 and to captain in 1898. He retired in December 1899.

BROOKS, EDWARD CRANSTON: Born in Oregon, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1886. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Cavalry. He served at Fort Davis with Troop H, 8th Cavalry, from November 1887 to May 1888. He was promoted to first lieutenant in the 6th Cavalry in 1893 and to captain in the 3rd Cavalry in February 1901. A month later, he transferred to the 11th Cavalry.

BROWN, HARVEY ELLICOTT: Born in New York, he entered the army in June 1861 and served as an assistant surgeon in the 70th New York Volunteers. He resigned from the volunteers in December 1862 and was appointed an assistant surgeon in the Regular Army in April 1863. He was promoted to surgeon in 1881, and served at Fort Davis, with the rank of major, as post surgeon, from April to August 1881. He died in August 1889.

BROWN, PAUL RICHARD: Born in New York, he entered the army in November 1874 as an assistant surgeon with the rank of first lieutenant. He served at Fort Davis from November 1881 to May 1882 as post surgeon with the rank of captain. He was promoted to major and surgeon in 1891 and received a disability retirement in October 1897.

BROWN, WILLIAM HARVEY: Born in Pennsylvania, he was appointed a captain in the 14th Infantry in May 1861. He transferred to the 32nd Infantry in 1866 and to the 21st Infantry in 1869. Appointed a major with the 18th Infantry in 1871, he served at Fort Davis from January to May 1882 as the lieutenant colonel of the 1st Infantry. He died in March 1883 at West Chester, Pennsylvania.

BUDD, GEORGE WASHINGTON: Born in New York, he enlisted as a first sergeant in the 2nd Iowa Cavalry in August 1861. Appointed a second lieutenant in June 1862, he mustered out as a captain in September 1865. Appointed a second lieutenant in the 9th Cavalry in August 1867, he served at Fort Davis with the 9th from October 1868 to January 1869 with Company F. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1872 and retired in June 1878.
