Officers of Fort Davis 1854 - 1891

ALLAIRE, WILLIAM HERBERT: Born in Arkansas in1858, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1882. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 23rd Infantry. He served at Fort Davis as a second lieutenant with Company G, 23rd Infantry, in May of 1890. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1890, and to captain in 1898. He retired as a colonel in December 1921 and died in May 1933.

ALLEN, JAMES: Born in Indiana, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1872. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1879 and served at Fort Davis from August 1886 to August 1887 as a first lieutenant with Company M, 3rd Cavalry. He was promoted to captain in 1888 and to major with the U. S. Army Signal Corps in 1899.  

ANDREWS, GEORGE: Born in Rhode Island, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1876 and served at Fort Davis from October 1876 to April 1880 as a second lieutenant with Company I, 25th Infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1883, to captain in 1892, and to major and assistant adjutant-general in 1898. In 1902, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, assistant adjutant-general.

ANDREWS, GEORGE LIPPITT: Born in Rhode Island in 1828, he was appointed the lieutenant colonel of the 1st Missouri Infantry in April 1861. He transferred to the 1st Missouri Light Artillery on September 1, 1861, mustering out four days later to accept an appointment as a major in the 17th Infantry. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 13th Infantry in 1864. He was assigned to the 25th Infantry in December 1870 and promoted to colonel in January1871. He served at Fort Davis from May 1872 to August 1879 as the regimental commander of the 25th Infantry and as the post commander. He retired in April 1892.

APPEL, DANIEL MITCHELL: Born in Pennsylvania, he served as an assistant surgeon with the rank of captain at Fort Davis from September 1886 to November 1888. He was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, in 1895.

ARMSTRONG, ROBERT GEORGE: Born in Pennsylvania in 1841, he enlisted as a private in the 11th Pennsylvania Reserve in April 1861 and was mustered out in June 1864. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Infantry in 1867 and a first lieutenant in 1874. He served at Fort Davis from May 1881 to July 1882 with Company G, 1st Infantry. He was promoted to captain in 1883 and died on active duty in April 1893.

ARMSTRONG, SAMUEL EDWARD: Born in Indiana, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery in July 1861 and was mustered out as a captain in February 1866. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the 41st Infantry in 1866, and promoted to first lieutenant in 1867. He transferred to the 24th Infantry in May 1870 and served at Fort Davis from November 1870 to February 1871with Company B, 24th Infantry. He was promoted to captain in May1871 and retired in 1878.

AUGUR, AMMON ARTHUR: Born in Michigan, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1877 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 24th Infantry. He served at Fort Davis from September to November 1880 as a second lieutenant with Company C, 24th Infantry. His promotion to first lieutenant was backdated to June 1880.  He was promoted to captain in 1895 and to major in the 25th Infantry in 1901.

AYRES, CHARLES GREENLIEF: Born in New York in 1854, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the 25th Infantry in October 1874. He transferred to the 10th Cavalry in September 1875. He served with the 10th at Fort Davis as a second lieutenant with Company H from October 1875 through December 1882, and as the first lieutenant of Company M from January 1883 to April 1885. He was promoted to captain in 1892 and to major in the 8th Cavalry in 1901.
