Plagiopodopsis cockerelliae

Heliosporites

palynomorph name

Plant Megafossils

Common name: Cockerell's moss. Bryophytes such as moss lack vascular tissue to circulate liquid. They do not flower or produce seeds, but rather reproduce by spores. They are considered to be some of the most primitive plants, and may have evolved from green algae. Most mosses prefer cool, damp, shady areas with acidic soil. Cockerell's moss and Scudder's moss, the two species identified from Florissant fossils, likely covered parts of the Eocene forest floor, and perhaps grew on trees and rocks as well.

Other species:

  • Plagiopodopsis scudderi

Pollen morphotypes

  • Heliosporites sp.
