Common names: nutmeg (unrelated to the spice), stinking cedar (not in the cedar family), stinking yew, or kaya nut. Torreya is a slow-growing conifer unrelated to the spice nutmeg (family Myristicaceae) and only distantly related to cedar (family Pinaceae, genus Cedrus). It has needle-like evergreen leaves. The modern species Torreya nucifera (kaya nut or Japanese nutmeg-yew) is prized for its beautiful wood, and edible, oil-bearing nuts. Two species of Torreya grow in the southern U.S. today, but the genus is otherwise restricted to Asia.
