Clams (Phylum Mollusca, Class Bivalvia)

There is only one species of freshwater clam found at Florissant. Tentatively identified as Sphaerium florissantense, this species of freshwater clam required well-oxygenated waters, and fed on diatoms and other algae. Interestingly, Sphaerium mostly occurs in the upper shale unit but is rare in the middle and lower units, this could mean that the lower and middle shale units were poorly oxygenated.
