Most Fire Island National Seashore facilities are closed in the off-season.

Open year-round the Fire Island Lighthouse offers many indoor exhibits that explore the topic of maritime history.

Considered Fire Island's off-season, winter is a quieter, peaceful time. Ferry service is minimal, but vehicle accesses via the Robert Moses Causway Bridge and the Smith Point Bridge remain open.
Although at times extremely cold, if you're properly prepared you can experience a different beauty on Fire Island. The landscape can sometimes be covered in a blanket of white snow with barren branches encased in ice and glistening in the sun.
White-tailed deer sport their dull winter coats and sightings of seals and even the occassional whale have been reported.
(Please report the stranding of a marine mammal or sea turtle to the nearest ranger or call the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation hotline at 631-369-9829. Do not approach any sick or injured animal.)
