Question: Why did ER call the cottage Val-Kill?

Answer:

[picture: sign in front of Val-Kill Cottage, Home of Eleanor Roosevelt] The Roosevelts loved to picnic beside Fallkill Creek, a stream that contained short waterfalls. Early Dutch settlers of Hyde Park had originally called that area Val-Kill, combining "val" (waterfall) with "kill" (stream). The cottage, at FDR's request, was modeled after an early Dutch colonial cottage; therefore, ER used the early Dutch colonial name for the area as her name for the retreat.
