The Roosevelts loved to picnic beside Fallkill Creek, a
stream that contained short waterfalls. Early Dutch settlers
of Hyde Park had originally called that area Val-Kill, combining
"val" (waterfall) with "kill" (stream). The cottage, at
FDR's
request, was modeled after an early Dutch colonial cottage;
therefore, ER used the early Dutch colonial name for the
area as her name for the retreat.
