My Prediction

Strand: Science
Grade Level: 1 - 2
Duration: 20 minutes
Location: classroom
Objective: The students will be able to draw a prediction of what they will see at the Effigy Mounds National Monument including nature, wildlife, and the mounds.
Materials: paper
crayons or markers
Vocabulary: burial mounds

nature
Procedure:
  1. Discuss with the students the upcoming field trip to Effigy Mounds.  See background information for information about the Effigy Mounds National Monument
  2. Tell them they are going to make a prediction (guess) what this area will look like.   Tell them to include the mounds, wildlife, and nature in their pictures.
  3. Give them a predetermined amount of time to draw.
  4. When they return from the field trip, have them look at their drawings and discuss how their predictions differ from what they saw.  They can also describe the similarities.
