| Procedure: |
Part 1
- Have a discussion about why the past is important. What can we learn from the
past?
- Discuss why the burial mounds at Effigy Mounds National Monument were preserved.
Why did they take time to visit the monument?
- Why is it important to study history?
- Discuss the objects or the photos the children brought from home. Why are they
important to them? This discussion can be whole group or in small groups.
- Tell the students that they will be writing a paper telling:
- what the object is or what the picture is of (describe it well)
- where it came from or where it was taken
- who gave it to them
- why it is important to them
- Allow time for the students' to write their papers
- Have the students share their papers in small groups or as a whole class
Part 2
- Have a discussion with the students about what the object or photo that they brought to
school would tell about them if it was found in the ground 200 years from now
- What could we learn about you as a person about the culture that you lived in?
- Optional: The students could write a paper about what people could learn about
them and their culture if their object or photo was found 200 years from now.
