30 minutes |
| Location: |
On site, Effigy Mounds National Monument. Atl-Atl
Ballistics requires permission from the Effigy Mounds staff prior to your visit.
Monument personal will have to provide the atl-atl. The Atl-Atl throwing activity
will have to be carefully supervised by adults. |
| Objective: |
Students will determine the increased effectiveness of a
spear thrown with an atl-atl compared to one thrown by hand. |
| Materials: |
an atl-atl and spear (rangers have a set in the office)
a tape measure (at least 100 foot)
a stop watch |
| Vocabulary: |
|
| Procedure: |
- Have a student throw the spear by hand. Using the stop watch, note the amount of
time from when the spear leaves the student's hand to when it hits the ground. Then
using the tape, measure the distance in feet that the spear traveled. Those two
measurements will give you the time the hand thrown spear was in the air and the distance
it traveled.
- Now have a student or the Ranger (an experienced atl-atl thrower) throw the spear using
the atl-atl. Complete the same two measurements in step one on the atl-atl thrown
spear.
- Now divide the distance traveled by the flight time for both the atl-atl thrown spear
and the hand thrown spear. These two figures will give your students an idea of how
much more effective a spear thrown with an atl-atl is than one thrown by hand.
