| Procedure: |
Before visiting provide students with some basic background information on the Effigy Mound
culture. This information can be obtained by contacting the Effigy Mounds National
Monument or on their website at http://www.nps.gov/efmo/home.htm. During
the visit, have students take notes about the people who lived and worked in the area.
Suggested items may include types of shelter, types of food and how obtained,
customs and/or ceremonies, etc.
Upon returning, inform students that they are going to design a "report card"
for a mound builder. Ask students to consider how they would rate this person and
how this person compares to present day people. Have students create a report card
on the computer using standard grades (A, B, C, D, or F) in at least five categories.
Some suggestions may be:
- leadership skills
- organization and planning
- community relations
- perseverance
- ethical conduct
- intelligence
- decision-making skills
- treatment of others
- contributions to history
Using their notes, have students justify the mark with a two or three sentence
explanation next to each grade. Students may give any grade as long as it is
justified by specific facts and examples. |
