Man vs. Nature

Students will write an essay about how they can save the Effigy Mounds National Monument

Procedure:
  1. Explain that there were originally 10,000 mounds in the area that the park now manages and that fewer than 200 remain today.  There are many reasons why many of the mounds are destroyed
  2. Have the students brainstorm ideas of reasons why the mounds have disappeared.  Use resources such as maps, newspaper articles, excavation records for mounds 55, 56, and 57, etc. to determine why so few mounds remain.
  3. Use the chart and fill in the rest of the blanks with the students.  List causes and effects of changes made to the Effigy Mounds National Monument.  Next, decide if they are man-made or natural changes.  Also note if the changes had a positive or negative effect on the Effigy Mounds area.
  4. Each student will write an essay about the positive influences they can have on Effigy Mounds National Monument and the preservation of the mounds.
