| Vocabulary: |
compass rose
map key
map scale
cardinal directions
intermediate directions
excavated |
| Procedure: |
- Give each student a copy of the maps. Locate and explain the use of the compass
rose, map key and map scale. Explain the cardinal directions and then the
intermediate directions
- Ask them to place their finger on a point north of the Visitor Center. Visually
check students' answers. Other questions are on the Mound Map worksheet.
- Ask students to cut paper rulers using the map scale as a guide. Explain that the
distances written on the Official Map are measured distances along the trails which aren't
the shortest distance between the two points. Begin with a simple measurement
between Fire Point and Eagle Rock. All measurements will be approximate due to the
lack of a specific point-to-point measurement. Follow with questions on the Mound
Map Worksheet.
- Students will now use map keys to find out information. Ask them to tell how to
determine if a mound has been excavated. Continue with Mound Map worksheet.
Extension/Related Activities:
- Apply latitude and longitude measurements to map skills.
- When visiting the park you could find specific latitude and longitude locations using a
handheld Magellan global positioning monitor.
