A Walk in the Park

Strand: Math, Physical Fitness
Grade Level: 4 - 6
Duration: 2 45 minute class periods
Location: day one, classroom; day two, on site
Objective: Students will determine the number of steps it takes to walk ten meters.
Students will convert meters to kilometers
Students will measure the distance to specific points in the park by the approximate number of steps used to reach the point
Students will test their calculations
Materials: 10 yard/meter sticks
masking tape
long flat surface-hallway or sidewalk will work
Vocabulary:
Procedure: Day One
  1. Preparation of activity involves taping meter sticks down end to end to form line of 10 meters in hall or on sidewalk.  Tape a lien at both ends of the row of meter sticks perpendicular to the sticks for a starting line and finish line
  2. Students should walk one at a time along line of measure to see how many steps it takes them to reach the end from the starting line.  They will need to remember this number as they will use it to convert to steps later.
  3. Use the number to divide the distance to specific points at the park.  For example Fire Point is 3 km from the Visitor Center.  If you walked 10 meters in 37 steps, it will take you approximately 3700 steps to reach Fire Point and return to the Visitor Center.
  4. Use the tables below to figure the number of steps it would take to walk to a particular site and return to the Visitor's Center or Day-Use Area (remember 1 km = 1,000 m).   Take the number of steps you took to reach 10 meters and multiply by 100.  Now multiply that number by the number of kilometers in the table.  This would be the approximate number of steps to a site and returning to the starting point.

Destination and return from Visitor's Center Distance

    Fire Point

    3 km

    Twin Views

    4 km

    Third Scenic View

    6 km

    Hanging Rock

    11 km
Destination and return from Day Use Area Distance

    Compound Mound

    6 km

    Marching Bear Group

    6 km

Day Two

  1. During your site visit, test at least one of your estimates to see if your guess was close to the actual number of steps.
  2. Discuss why your estimates may be off.

Extension/Related Activities

  1. While walking up the trail, play Effigy Mounds Bingo found in the Junior Ranger Booklet found at the Visitor Center.  Be sure to record your steps each time you stop so you don't forget the number of steps you've taken.
