WASHINGTON
CROSSING
In the Winter of 1776, George Washington and his army were close to
defeat, and as the harsh weather set in, morale was extremely low.
Washington and his officers devised a courageous plan to cross the Delaware
on Christmas night to surprise the British troops, and this historic and
successful journey re-ignited the cause of freedom and gave new life to
the American Revolution. Washington
Crossing Historic Park was founded in 1917 to preserve this site and
the park receives thousands of visitors a year and offers exhibits and
special events including an annual re-enactment of the crossing.
Today the park offers a comprehensive Visitors Center and a special collection
of old taverns, homes, mills, and inns located at a picturesque spot on
the Delaware River.
