NEWTOWN

Historic map of New Town.Newtown Townstead was part of a large tract of land purchased by William Penn from the Lenape Native Americans in 1682.  The town was surveyed by Thomas Holme in accordance to William Penn's circular town plan show on the right.  The plan initially involved a central "common" 44 acres along Newtown Creek surrounded by lots so that each landholder could have both a town lot and adjoining farm area.  Newtown acted as the county seat from 1726 to 1813 when the local government moved to Doylestown.

Today there are many old houses, churchs, inns, and taverns that preserve the rich history of the area.  In this quaint town, now busting with suburban energy, one can still enjoy exquisite Victorian Gothic architecture at the Cernea House, or visit the Historic Presbyterian Church, which was a shelter for General Washington's Hessian prisoners following the Battle of Trenton during the American Revolution.

Ye Olde Temperance House - Built in 1772, it is still operating as an authentic tavern offering fine dining and thirteen room inn. (215) 860-0474 or 1-800-446-0474

Langhorne Players at the Spring Garden Mill Playhouse - Offering vibrant, contemporary theatre.  Voted Best of Bucks County.  (215)860-0818
