PITTSTOWN AND NANTICOKE

The anthracite fields at Pittston and Nanticoke were the sites of intense mining and heavy industry.  Coal was taken from the ground and shipped to the more central town of Ashley to be processed.  The extreme landscape and mountainous terrain made the extraction and transportation of anthracite difficult.  The coal was transported to Ashley by railroad.  Pittston and Nanticoke are prime examples of towns developed to support the mining industry.
