Walking Tours of Wright-Dunbar Village

May 27, 2004

Starting on May 29, 2004, the staff of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park will conduct daily walking tours of Wright-Dunbar Village. The tours will provide an introduction to the neighborhood in which Wilbur and Orville lived and worked, as well as an introduction to the redevelopment efforts underway. Tours will take place daily at 10:00 am. through September 6.

The near west side of Dayton was home to the Wright family from the 1870s until 1914. It saw the growth and development of their printing and bicycle business as well as their quest for powered, heavier-than-air controlled flight. This is the neighborhood in which the Wright brothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar interacted and became friends. The area also served as a business and entertainment hub for the African American community through the 1960s. Today, the area around the bicycle shop is the center of redevelopment efforts being undertaken by the city of Dayton in partnership with private developers. The walking tours are designed to highlight locations of historical significance and to showcase the rebuilding effort that is currently in progress.

The tours are free of charge and are open to the general public. For more information, please contact Park Ranger Ann Honious at
937-225-7705.
