Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Tour
Red Lock - Lock 34

Photo: Red LockLock 34 or "Red Lock" is one of 44 locks along the Ohio & Erie Canal that lifted canal boats 395 feet between Cleveland and Akron. Although the origin of its name is not certain, Red Lock may have been named after the red-painted lock gates, or because red clay was found along the canal in this area.

Between 1905 and 1909 the State of Ohio performed repairs with concrete on the locks original sandstone blocks. The remains of this concrete are still visible.

An exhibit at this location contains a painting of a jousting match by Frank Wilcox with a caption that reads: When two boats came to a lock at the same time, canal rules stated that the upstream boat had the right of way. However, which boat actually "locked through" first was often decided by jousting between the boat crews.

How Locks Work

Location: Immediately adjacent to the Red Lock Trailhead (60K) on the Towpath Trail.
