Moody and Thomas Mill

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Logo

Historic Photo of the MillIn 1832 a grist mill was built on this site, using water power from the river to grind wheat into flour. The Ohio & Erie Canal provided an efficient way to transport the flour to market.

The mill had at least two owners before Charles Thomas and Chandler Moody bought it in 1885. They renamed it and replaced the original mill with a larger structure in 1902. The Moody and Thomas Mill burned down December 26, 1931.

There is an exhibit on the south end of the Towpath Trail bridge over the Cuyahoga River which contains the photo on the left. It also features an historic photo taken from the other side of the river, showing the dam that diverted water to power the mill. The remains of the dam can still be seen in the river.

Location: About 1/10 of a mile south of the Lock 29 Trailhead (51K) on the Towpath Trail, immediately adjacent to the footbridge over the Cuyahoga River.
