Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Tour
Johnnycake Lock - Lock 27

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Logo

Bikers near Lock 27In the spring of 1828, this section of the Ohio & Erie Canal, then newly completed, experienced its first flood. One-half mile south of here, the flood caused Furnace Run Culvert to fail and the canal to silt. Several boats ran aground and were stranded at Lock 27. As supplies ran low, canal passengers and crew ate only corn meal pancakes, known as "johnnycakes." The nickname stuck for Lock 27.

An exhibit near this lock contains an illustration of the events described above.
