Photo: Jaite Paper Mill RuinsBefore you is the site of the Jaite Paper Mill, constructed in 1906 out of concrete block reputedly made from Cuyahoga River sand. Between 1926 and 1927, the mill was remodeled to accommodate an overhead crane and a fourdrinier machine, to allow production of a continuous web of paper.

As many as 250 workers were employed at Jaite, producing up to 8 tons of paper daily. Like the canal, the Jaite Paper Mill felt the effects of competition beyond its control and closed in 1984.

An exhibit at this location contains two historic photographs with captions that read:

View of the Jaite Paper Mill from this location and the Ohio & Erie Canal that the mill used as a reservoir.

Fourdrinier paper machine from the Jaite Mill.

Location: About 1/4 of a mile south of the Red Lock Trailhead (60K) on the Towpath Trail.
