Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Tour
Furnace Run

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Logo

Furnace Run Aqueduct RuinsThe original stone arch culvert that carried the Ohio & Erie Canal over Furnace Run washed out in 1828, less than a year after the opening of the canal in the Cuyahoga Valley. After several episodes of repairing the culvert after washouts, an iron bowstring truss aqueduct replaced the culvert by 1860. Furnace Run kept its reputation for flooding, requiring several reconstructions of the aqueduct to keep the canal open.

An exhibit at this location includes an historic illustration with a caption that reads: Furnace Run Iron Aqueduct, from an 1892 map of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Location: About 1/10 of a mile north of the Hunt Farm Visitor Information Center (48K) on the Towpath Trail.
