Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Tour
Deep Lock Quarry

Cuyahoga Valley National Park Logo

Photo: Quarry with Millstone in ForegroundThe Ohio & Erie Canal became the way to transport stone from the quarry to communities developing along the canal, especially Akron and Cleveland.

In 1879, Ferdinand Schumacher bought part of the quarry to make millstones for his American Cereal Works in Akron, the predecessor to the "Quaker Oats."

There is an exhibit along the Towpath Trail relating to the quarry which includes an historic photograph of Deep Lock Quarry with a caption that reads: A short, uphill walk will lead you to Deep Lock Quarry, a source of sandstone since the 1830s. Stones from this quarry were used to repair locks along the Ohio & Erie Canal.

The exhibit also includes an historic photograph with a caption that reads: Loading stone into a canal boat.

The photograph featured on this page is the quarry as it appears today with an abandoned millstone in the foreground.

Location: On the Towpath Trail about 7/10 of a mile south of the Lock 29 Trailhead (51K) in Peninsula.
