The Guzzler Rifle
Writer Wallace Stegner declared that national parks are certainly the best idea America ever had. Indeed, over 375 units comprise the National Park System, preserving and protecting for present and future generations the natural, cultural, and historical resources that truly are significant chapters in America's history.

Americans have enjoyed a love affair with their national parks since Yellowstone, our first national park, was created in 1872. Now you can help care for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park – by joining

those who volunteer their time and talents to help safeguard this heritage. In 1998, 108 volunteers at Cumberland Gap showed their tremendous support for the park, and their belief in the mission of the National Park Service by contributing 7,259 hours of work.

Volunteers at the park perform a wide variety of tasks – they help staff the visitor center information desk, serve as campground hosts, conduct interpretive tours, drive a shuttle van, maintain the park library, perform general maintenance, or serve as caretakers at Hensley Settlement.

When selecting volunteers, we strive to match an applicant's abilities, talents, and interests with the park's needs. We provide volunteers with orientation and training for their assigned duties. In some cases, we can provide housing, but our limited housing can fill up quickly.

The rewards of volunteering at Cumberland Gap are limitless. The area is rich in both cultural and natural resources, scenery is spectacular, and opportunities to visit with people from throughout the U.S. and the world are enormous.
