The following information is to assist hunters in understanding federal regulations and law pertaining to hunting, weapons and transportion of lawfully taken wildlife through Crater Lake National Park.

Violators of these federal regulations will be prosecuted. Penalties upon conviction may include fines of up to $20,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years. Firearms, vehicles, horses or other instruments used in the taking of wildlife can be seized by rangers and forfeited to the government.


Federal Regulations

36 CFR S1.4: Hunting
As defined by federal regulation, hunting means “taking or attempting to take wildlife.” Take or Taking means to “pursue, hunt, harass, harm, shoot, trap, net, capture, collect, kill, wound, or attempt to do any of the above.”

36 CFR S2.2: Wildlife Protection
(a)(2) The feeding, touching, teasing, frightening, or taking of wildlife, or intentional disturbing of wildlife nesting, breeding, or other activities is prohibited.

(a)(3) The possession of unlawfully taken carcasses or portions thereof (in violation of federal or state law) is prohibited. (Possession within the Park of dead wildlife or parts thereof shall be prima facie evidence that the person or persons having the same are guilty of violating this act.)

(d) The transportation of lawfully taken wildlife over park roads is allowed only on Highway 62, and from the junction of Highway 62 north, through the park on West Rim Drive, to Highway 138. This lawfully taken wildlife shall be covered and transported in such a means and manner so as to minimize its visual presence to park visitors. State laws applicable to tagging and transport shall also apply.

(e) The park is closed to the viewing of wildlife through the use of artificial light.

36 CFR S2.4: Weapons, Traps, and Nets
(a)(1) Possessing, carrying, or using a weapon trap or net is prohibited.

(a)(3) Traps, nets and unloaded weapons may be possessed within a temporary lodging (cabin) or mechanical mode of conveyance (vehicle) when such implements are rendered temporarily inoperable or are packed, cased or stored in a manner that will prevent their ready use. Unloaded is defined by federal regulation to mean that “there is no unexpended shell, cartridge, or projectile in any chamber or cylinder of a firearm or in a clip or magazine inserted in or attached to a firearm.”

(b) Carrying or possessing a loaded weapon in a motor vehicle, vessel or other mode of transportation is prohibited.

(b)(6) Displaying wildlife carcasses or other remains or parts thereof, is prohibited.
