Cowpens National Battlefield felt only the edge of Hurricane Ivan as he came roaring through September 16, 2004. However, the heavy rainfall from Hurricane Frances the previous week had left the ground saturated with water, and in many places, unstable. Hurricane Ivan broke up trees, flooded streams, and washed out roads. Here are some pictures of the damage at the battlefield.

A pine tree damaged several other trees when it fell across the trail access to the battlefield.
An oak snapped and fell.

The images on the top show some of the trees that were toppled by the wind.

The images on the bottom show damage to the historic Green River Road, which the Americans and British used to get to the Cow Pens. The park had begun stablization efforts, but the rain washed the soil and rock away from the road and into the grass.

The road surface washed away despite the park's efforts to stop it.
Ruts in the Green River Road
The soil and rock from the Green River Road washed into the adjacent grass.
