Education Day for local schools
10:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m. In conjunction with the 225th anniversary of the battle of Cowpens, Cowpens National Battlefield will be holding a special education day for SC 4th grades and NC 5th grades - groups of 60 or less; homeschool association groups of 10 or more (SC 4th grade/NC 5th grade only). We're sorry, we cannot accomodate other age groups. Reenactors demonstrate 18th century activities and crafts. Each self-guided station stop should last no more than 15 minutes. Also self-guided battlefield walks.

Recreate historic walk of both Patriot and British soldiers from Grindal Shoals on the Pacolet River to arrive at the battlefield in time for the 7:00 a.m. battlefield tour on January 17.

All visitors will be brought to the battlefield by bus and satellite parking locations have been identified. Buses will be color coded so if you take a "blue bus" when you arrive you will take a "blue bus" to return to your vehicle.
Upon arrival at the park's visitor center, you can choose which activity you wish to take part in. A full schedule of activities and events will be posted on the park website at: www.nps.gov/cowp. There will be a militia encampment located near the park's visitor center, or take a bus that will take you to other stops such as the Continental (American) encampment, the British encampment and Thickety Mountain viewpoint where you might join a battlefield walk.
Busses will also be available to carry you to a full scale battle reenactment scheduled for 2:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The battle will take place less than one mile from park grounds and a bus will be available to carry you either back to your car at satellite parking or back into the park. Park grounds will be closed at 5:00 p.m. on both days.
Satellite parking locations will be marked and manned to assist you. The locations are as follows:
From I-85 coming north (Atlanta or Greenville)- Take exit # 78, the Chesnee exit, Highway 221N for approx. 9 miles to Chesnee Middle School and Chesnee High School parking lots (795 S. Alabama Ave.), located on the right side of the highway. A uniformed officer will direct you to the parking area.
From I-85 coming south (Charlotte) - Take exit #92, the Gaffney & Cherokee Scenic Highway 11. At the end of the ramp and stop light, turn right and proceed approx. 10 miles west on SC Hwy 11. Satellite parking is located at Thickety Mountain Fish Camp ( 221 Old Metal Road) facing SC 11. Someone will be at the location to assist in parking.
From I-26 coming east (Asheville/Hendersonville) - Take exit # 5, the Cherokee Foothills Scenic SC Hwy. 11. At the end of the ramp turn left going east on SC 11. Follow 11 approx. 15 miles into the Town of Chesnee, cross the railroad tracks then turn right onto 221S at the intersection. Approximately 1 mile south, turn left into the Chesnee High and Chesnee Middle schools parking lots (795 S. Alabama Ave.). A uniformed officer will direct you to the parking area.
From 221 Alt. south (Mooresboro, Shelby, Ellenboro) - Parking will be available approx. 1 mile before the intersection with SC 11 at Cherokee County Livestock located at 535 Cliffside Hwy. The lot will be marked and there will be someone there to assist in parking.
From 221 south (Forest City, Rutherfordton, Marion) - Take 221S to Chesnee and stay on 221S until you reach Chesnee High and Chesnee Middle schools parking lots (795 S. Alabama Ave.), they will be located on your left A uniformed officer will direct you to the parking area.
From 110 north (City of Cowpens, Pacolet) - Take highway 110 approx. 10 miles to where it intersects with SC 11, cross SC11 and proceed for one mile on 221Alt. to Cherokee County Livestock at 535 Cliffside Hwy. The lot will be marked and there will be someone there to assist in parking.
