Georgetown

Located at 1057 Thomas Jefferson Street, NW Washington, DC 20007 (202-653-5190) the Georgetown Visitor Center is closed for renovation. It is expected to re-open in Spring 2006.

Established in 1751, Georgetown flourished as a tobacco port until the middle of the 19th century. Because of natural obstructions to transportation further up the Potomac River, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal began here its 184.5-mile journey to the reaches of Western Maryland. Explore the beautiful architecture, rich history and vibrant commercial life that Georgetown offers. Step back in time by riding a reproduction canal boat pulled by mules as it travels along the canal through the old warehouse district of Georgetown. The National Park Service offers walking tours of this historic town throughout the summer months on the weekends, and boat rides Wednesday through Sunday during the summer.
