Cumberland

Known as the Queen City of the Potomac, Cumberland is the end of the line for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The city has been a well-known transportation hub since colonial times. The National Road began here in the early 1800's and wound its way across the mountains to Ohio and the CSX railroad hub is located in Cumberland. The likes of George Washington, General Braddock and other famous figures play an important part in its history.

Today, the Western Maryland Railway station houses the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Visitor Center, where exhibits explain the history of the canal and the people who lived and worked on it. The Cumberland Visitor Center is currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Call ahead to confirm hours of operation.
