Hunting Map and Regulations

Welcome to Chickasaw National Recreation Area. We hope you have a safe and successful hunting season. A variety of game including quail, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, dove, ducks, geese, and deer may be found here. However, due to the small size of the area and heavy hunting pressure, success is limited. TRAPPING IS PROHIBITED. All deer and turkey taken within the Chickasaw National Recreation Area must be checked in by a Ranger.

Hunting Regulations

Most state hunting regulations are applicable in Chickasaw National Recreation Area with the following exceptions. The use of artificial light to view wildlife is prohibited. Baiting of wildlife is also prohibited. Feral hogs may be taken year round in compliance with state regulations. All tree stands must be portable and removed after each hunt. Hunters must have a valid Oklahoma hunting license. Hunting licenses, special tags, and waterfowl stamps are NOT available on site. The current "Oklahoma Hunting Regulations" provides state hunting information and special regulations for Chickasaw National Recreation Area. It is available from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, State Game Rangers, Park Rangers, and license sales outlets.

Firearms

FEDERAL REGULATIONS PROHIBIT THE DISCHARGE OF FIREARMS WITHIN THE CHICKASAW NATIONAL RECREATION AREA EXCEPT IN THE LAWFUL TAKING OF GAME ANIMALS. All sighting in and target practice must be done prior to entering the recreation area, since there is no designated target practice area. Fully automatic weapons are prohibited. Carrying or possessing a loaded weapon in a motor vehicle or other means of transportation is prohibited. Guns carried in a vehicle must be unloaded, broken down, or encased.

The Ethical Hunter

Knows and follows all the game laws and regulations. Is familiar with various game habitats and can identify game in the field. Practices judging distance and shoots ONLY at game within range. Always uses weapons and ammunition appropriate for the game being hunted. Makes sure gun is sighted in and practices at a range to develop marksmanship ability. Knows the importance of being seen and wears fluorescent orange outer garments when appropriate. ALWAYS gets permission from the landowner to hunt on private land. Treats the land where hunting as if it were his own. Understands that his commitment to ethical hunting helps ensure the future of the sport.

Boundaries

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is surrounded by private lands. State law requires that permission of the landowner or the custodian be obtained prior to entry on private lands. Therefore, it is important that hunters be familiar with the recreation area boundaries. Not all of the recreation area is open to hunting. All developed areas are closed and some areas are only open to archery and shotshells only. The attached color coded map indicates which areas are closed or restricted.

Camping/Vehicles

Camping is available in the recreation area throughout the year in designated campsites. All vehicles are restricted to established roads. NO OFF ROAD TRAVEL IS PERMITTED IN THE RECREATION AREA.

Safety Tips

NEVER POINT A GUN AT ANYTHING YOU DO NOT WANT TO SHOOT. Treat every gun with the respect due a loaded gun. Always be sure that the barrel and action are clear of obstruction. Carry your gun so that you can control the direction of the muzzle. Keep the safety ON until you are ready to shoot. Never climb a tree, fence, or other obstacle with a loaded gun. Never shoot at a flat, hard surface or the surface of the water. Unattended guns should be unloaded. Guns and ammunition should be stored safely beyond the reach of children. DO NOT MIX ALCOHOL AND GUNPOWDER!

In Case Of Emergency

Ranger stations are located at the Buckhorn and Travertine areas. Park personnel are on duty to make your visit safe and enjoyable. If you have an emergency and are unable to locate a park ranger, call the Sulphur Police at 622-2000 and they will notify a ranger of your emergency.
