The Folsom Archeological site was the first documented discovery of man-made objects associated with bones of extinct animals. This discovery established that people have lived in North America for over 10,000 years. The first excavations were conducted in 1926. The site is a National Historic Landmark, a New Mexico State Monument and on the National Register of Historic Places.
