Getting Your Goat

Mrs. Paula Sandburg spent considerable time breeding goats at Connemara and at the Sandburg's previous home in Michigan. Goats from her herd, dubbed Chikaming, won numerous awards at state fairs.

Mrs. Sandburg believed drinking goat's milk had benefits over drinking cow's milk. She was convinced that her gall bladder problems were cured by drinking goat's milk.

She pioneered a technique of breeding goats that involved choosing a male goat (buck) to mate with a female goat (doe) based on his mother's or sister's genetic make-up and physical characteristics.

In this activity you will be asked to choose the best mate for a female goat named Cherikha (the name of Mrs. Sandburg's first Nubian goat).

The task is to create a female goat who delivers at least 4 pounds of milk per day within two generations. Briefly study the dairy goat diagram and the breeding points before you choose which male to breed with Cherikha.
