Where to? What Next?

Uncovering Chicago

As a boy, Sandburg lived in Galesburg, Illinois, a main stop for trains headed for Chicago. Until his first visit at age 18, Chicago was a mystery.

During his twenties and thirties, Sandburg knew Chicago well. He lived many of those days in Chicago and became well acquainted with the "Freight Handler to the Nation." Sandburg published his first book of poetry, Chicago Poems in 1916.
