The number of reptilian species present in Buffalo National River is uncertain. Past, localized surveys have came up with 40 to 45 species, but only a limited area was searched and the time period was limited to spring. The red-bellied snake, like most reptiles found on the park, is found only in specific habitats. Reptile habitats can range from semiaquatic to the zeric cedar glades located on bluffs. Currently, a two year project is underway to locate as many reptilian species as possible and document the settings of the habitat. Because the diversity in habitat, a high number of species are expected to be found.
