Buffalo National River is located in the rugged Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. Although much of the area is steep and remote, the National Park Service is striving to make its facilities accessible to all segments of the population. The purpose of this guide is to provide physically challenged visitors information on accessible areas within the park. Disabilities that do not require use of a wheelchair may allow broader utilization of the park.

Individual campsites within Buffalo National River are available on a first-come/first-serve basis. Accessible sites are held open until all other sites have been filled, but may be occupied by anyone after that time. Reservations are accepted for group campsites (tent only) with a party of ten or more persons and for use of picnic pavilions.

Golden Access Passport

The Golden Access Passport, free to any U.S. citizen who is permanently disabled, may be obtained in person at any contact station by showing proof of medically determined permanent disability or eligibility for receiving benefits under federal law. The passport provides free lifetime entrance to federally administered land management areas and a fifty-percent discount on user fees charged by these agencies.

The brochure "Federal Recreation Passport Program" explains the benefits of becoming a Golden Access holder. That brochure is available at Park Headquarters and at all contact stations.

For More Information

Park Headquarters is located on the first floor of the Federal Building in Harrison. The building and office entrances are accessible, but public restrooms are not. Buffalo National Rivers' TDD phone number for the hearing impaired is (870) 741-2884.
