This U. S. Navy destroyer has a long and distinguished history. Built in 1943, at the San Pedro ship yard in California, she saw action in the Pacific at Saipan, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At Okinawa she was hit by two kamikazes, killing 22 and wounding over 100 . After the war she was retired, but put back into service for the Cold War. U.S.S. Cassin Young spent nine months off of Korea then spent the rest of her service in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. She was finally retired in 1960. In 1978 she was transferred to Boston National Historical Park where she greets visitors and helps to tell the story of both the workers who built these ships and the sailors who manned them.
