Waters
Farm
Sutton, Massachusetts

Donated to the Town of Sutton by Dorothea Waters
Moran in 1974, the Waters
Farm occupies 130 acres, and is home to one of the Town’s oldest
historic structures, the original farmhouse that was constructed circa
1757-62. Under the single ownership of the Waters family for over 250
years, the farm was transferred to the Town provided that it would be
preserved for the public’s benefit as a historical museum and conservation
land.
Since the Town assumed ownership of the property, it has
worked to make it a place where Sutton residents can gather and learn
about the Town’s rich agricultural heritage. A volunteer-run non-profit
corporation works in close partnership with the Town to manage the property.
Dedicated volunteers, skilled in various trades, donate services as needed
towards the upkeep of the facility.
The property offers a variety of resources that attract a
diverse group of supporters, from those interested in architectural preservation
to farmers to trail builders and hikers. Waters Farm Preservation, Inc.
sponsors events such as Waters Farm Days (October), sleigh and trail rides.
In addition, the property can be used by community groups such as the
Boy Scouts and the 4H Club for outings.
Development of a management plan is in progress and is expected
to guide operations at the property into the future.
