Sprague Farm
Glocester, Rhode Island

Since its first purchase of 250 acres constituting Sprague Farm, the Glocester Land Trust has worked tirelessly to protect the natural habitat of this large tract of forested woodland where pileated woodpeckers and black-throated blue warblers nest. Negotiations with six land owners resulted in the successful purchase of 377 acres surrounding Sprague Farm and linking it to Land Trust property at Elbow Rock. In addition to providing contiguous habitat, Sprague Farm has hiking trails that provide recreational opportunities to area residents and visitors.

With the support of the Town Council, the Land Trust was authorized by the Rhode Island Legislature in 1987 and works in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Management to steward eight protected open spaces in Town.

Total project financing of approximately $500,000 was provided by a number of sources, including the Land Trust, the Town of Glocester, RI DEM Open Space Grant, the Nature Conservancy (Champlin Foundations, June Rockwell Levy Foundation, Mary Dexter Chafee Foundation), and donations of the land owners.
