Great
Road Open Space Preservation
Lincoln, Rhode Island

The Town of Lincoln, in conjunction with various
state and federal agencies, has been proactively planning for the preservation
of Great Road for several years. By purchasing land, conservation restrictions,
and development rights in the areas of Butterfly Pond, the Chase Farm,
the Hannaway Blacksmith Shop, the Hearthside property, Moffet Mill, and
the Smith Farm, the town will permanently protect some of the features
that are critical to the road’s historic and agricultural character.
In August, 2002, the Town will complete its Gateway park
project, which will link many of the properties that border Great Road’s
northern edge with walking/bicycling trails. In addition, a parking area
near the Eleazer Arnold House will provide a much-needed amenity for visitors
to this open space system. Enclosed with a split rail fence and planted
with crab apple trees, blueberry bushes, hydrangeas, and other native
plants, it is designed to complement the historic landscape.
