Five years ago, a group of interested residents in the Town of Millbury formed a local community development corporation to promote revitalization in its village center. With a 9-member board that conducts its regular business via monthly meetings, over 500 supporters are on the Initiative's membership list.

The group has begun a signage and façade grant program with seed money provided by a grant from the JHC Blackstone River Valley National Corridor Commission. In addition, they sponsor an annual summer concert series, and other "Main Street" improvement efforts. Among its achievements, the Initiative counts its support of a private developer's conversion of a centrally located, former textile mill into a mixed use complex of housing (112 units of 1-2 bedrooms) and office space. This project required a zoning change and issuance of a special permit, and the Initiative was a prominent advocate for both.

The Initiative also received a grant from the Department of Housing and Community Development that funded production of a Comprehensive Village Plan. The result of several public discussions, the plan contains design guidelines that promise to help Millbury's village center maintain its sense of place.
