Douglas Streetscape Improvements
Douglas, Massachusetts

With financial assistance through the Corridor Commission's Heritage Partnership Program, Douglas has produced a conceptual plan to make improvements to its historic streetscape (Route 16). As one of the few east-west corridors in the area, Route 16 has witnessed an increasing amount of traffic that has had some negative impact on this traditional village center. The challenge facing town officials is to slow the speed at which cars pass through Douglas without impeding traffic flow. In addition, there is an overall desire to return the streetscape to a pedestcrian-friendly environment. Through the use of traffic calming measures, the planting of shade trees, and installation of granite bollards that once distinguished downtown Douglas, town residents hope to recapture the ambience that the street once held. Having completed an underground utilities project this summer, the town has held off finish-coating the pavement in anticipation of being able to add streetscape amenities within the course of the year.

Coupled with the streetscape improvements is an economic development analysis that has looked at the Town's current business mix, its population, and other economic indicators, and proposed recommendations for supportable new commercial uses. The analysis has identified existing "gaps" in the Town's offerings which include potential for a medium-sized grocery and produce outlet.
