Chepachet Main Street Program
Glocester, Rhode Island

In 1998, the Town of Glocester worked with businesses to organize a Main Street Program for its historic village of Chepachet. Using seed funding from the Community Development Block Grant [CDBG] program, and assisted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Center, Chepachet was able to hire a Coordinator to build a local program modeled after similar efforts in Boston and elsewhere.

Now four years old, Chepachet Main Street has set up a non-profit corporation that applies for and receives funding in support of its preservation and revitalization goals. Through partnerships with the John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor Commission, the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, Woonsocket Radio, and the Glocester Heritage Society, the Main Street program is able to provide promotional and logistical assistance in sponsoring regular village events that are cornerstones for Chepachet's vitality, such as Heritage Day, annual Christmas candlelight shopping, and the popular "Elephant Day" in May.
