Legal Constraints on Hog Damage Control
Options for Big Thicket National Preserve
All alternatives under consideration must comply with
federal, state and local laws, policies and regulations. These include, but are
not limited to:
- PROTECTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES:
- National Environmental Policy Act
- U.S. Code, (16 or 18 USC)
- Code of Federal Regulations: Parks, Forests and
Public Policy (36CFR)
- Endangered Species Act
- PROTECTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE:
- Archaelogical Resources Protection Act
- Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act
- National Historic Preservation Act
- HEALTH AND SAFETY:
- Texas Animal Health Commission Regulations for
Trapping or Moving Feral (Wild) Swine
- Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
- PROTECTION OF BIG THICKET NATIONAL PRESERVE:
- NPS Organic Act
- Enabling Legislation of the Big Thicket National

- Outdoor Annual Hunting and Fishing Regulations
The following hog damage control options conflict with the
above laws, policies, and regulations and not authorized within Big Thicket
National Preserve:
- trapping of hogs by the general public
- public hunting with dogs
- public use of off-road vehicles
- hunting during periods of high public use (March through
June)
- chemicals (e.g. poisons, sterillants, pathogens)
- transport of hogs that have not tested negative for
brucellosis and pseudorabies within 30 days of capture for release elsewhere
- commercial profit from sales of any products from hogs
- any action that would harm an endangered species or
cultural resource
