Additional Geology Walks Scheduled at Badlands National Park

Is this rock or dirt? Why are these formations here? What makes those colors in the layers? All these questions and more will be answered if you attend the Geology Walks held at 2 p.m. on three Sundays this spring: April 25, May 2, and May 9. Retired geology professor Charles Cattell will lead a 45 minute walk along the Door Geology Trail in Badlands National Park. Those attending should be prepared for the weather – hat, sunglasses, rain jacket – and rough terrain – sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. The walk will cover approximately 300 meters, the first 100 meters along a wheelchair accessible boardwalk. Visitors should meet Charles at the shelter in the Door Parking Area, located 3 miles east of the Ben Reifel Visitor Center on the Badlands Loop Road. There is no charge for this program. Entrance fees for the park are $10 per passenger vehicle. Contact (605) 433 – 5235 for other fee information.

Mr. Cattell is volunteering at Badlands National Park this spring. A retired instructor of geology and geography at Isle College in England, he has also volunteered with the state of California at the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area and with the National Park Service at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. Reservations are not required. Questions about the program can be answered at (605) 433 – 5246.
