Badlands National Park Fire Management Plan Is Available For ReviewSuperintendent William R. Supernaugh announces that the Fire Management Plan, Environmental Assessment, and Fire Monitoring Plan for Badlands National Park are all available for public review and comment from March 30 through April 30, 2004. The entire document is available below. Those without Internet access can receive the documents either on CD ROM or a hard copy by contacting Linda Williams at 605/433-5265 or by emailing her at Linda_williams@nps.gov Additionally, park staff will be available for questions and conversations about the plan on Tuesday, April 13 in two open houses. The first will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Wall Community Center, across the street from Wall Drug Store. The second will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Badlands National Park Conference Room, located at park headquarters 2 miles east of Interior, South Dakota. The Fire Management Plan is a supplement to the park's Resource Management Plan and is required by the National Environmental Policy Act. The plan serves as a detailed program of actions for use and control of fire in Badlands National Park, providing resource managers specific guidance and procedures for accomplishing wildland fire management objectives. The plan includes definition of protection necessary to insure human safety and protection of facilities and resources, minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts of fire. Fire represents an ecological factor of significant importance in the development and structure of nearly every land-based ecosystem in North America and has been used by humans for centuries. As National Park Service management planning becomes more intensive, fire management assumes a role of greater importance, particularly in the restoration of native ecosystems such as the mixed grass prairie of Badlands National Park.
